The Department of Sociology in the College of Social Sciences at California State University, Fresno is accepting applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank with a Fall 2018 start date. We seek an individual who will: 1) excel in undergraduate teaching; 2) conduct scholarly and applied research; and 3) engage in service-related activities. Regular responsibilities involve undergraduate teaching (may include web-based instruction), research, publication, and other scholarly activities, as well as advising students and engaging in service at all levels of the university.

The Department of Sociology in the College of Social Sciences is among the most community-engaged departments at California State University, Fresno, and offers a baccalaureate of arts degree (B.A.) and minor degree in sociology, a minor degree in Philanthropic and Community-based Leadership and two certificates: 1) the Humanics Certificate in administration and leadership for community benefit organizations, and 2) a certificate in applied sociological research. All faculty are active in research, and students are encouraged to obtain research experience by working closely with faculty. The department also offers opportunities for outstanding students to gain hands-on research experience in applied community-based settings through its service-learning courses.

Required Education: An earned doctorate in Sociology or closely related field from an accredited institution is required. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered; however, the doctorate must be completed by 08/1/2018.

Required Experience: 1) Evidence of success in scholarly research, teaching experience, and community engagement; and 2) ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Sociology. Expertise and demonstrated background in two of the ranked areas: 1) Sociological Theory (classical and/or contemporary); 2) Sociology of Education; 3) Urban Sociology; 4) Sociology of Food; and 5) Public Sociology and Applied, Community-based Research, including knowledge of nonprofit community benefit organizations.
