The Library Director is responsible for the leadership, administration, operation and supervision of the Daniel Morgan Graduate School Library. The Director serves as part of the academic leadership and reports to the Dean of Graduate Studies. www.DMGS.org

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Fulfill the school’s education and research mission by providing access to library resources and services including circulation, research and reference functions;
  • Collaborate with DMGS affiliates and academic bodies to fulfill resource requirements appropriate to academic goals, programs, and course requirements and syllabi;
  • Foster cooperative relationships with external partners, stakeholders and donors to enhance specialized resources and services available to the Daniel Morgan community;
  • Direct the Library’s long-term and strategic planning and policy development;
  • Develop and administer the Library’s budget (materials and supplies), and work with all library vendors;
  • Supervise the recruitment, development and performance of library staff assistants and interns;
  • Ensure library patrons and supervised staff comply with applicable DMGS and library policies/procedures;
  • Compile and maintain relevant metrics data, and provide reporting on library activities as required;
  • Perform specialized library technical services – to include collection development, acquisition, collection maintenance and preservation, and cataloging;
  • Collaborate on website updates, promoting library services, and the development of library marketing materials as appropriate
  • Provide instruction to students on proper research methodologies
  • Participate in senior-level DMGS governing bodies, boards, task forces, and committees as required; and,
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in academic librarianship and higher education through the study of professional literature and participation in professional meetings, conventions, seminars, and workshops.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Master’s degree (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-Accredited LIS Program;
  • Several years experience in positions of increasing responsibility, including significant supervisory, leadership, and budgetary and financial management experience;
  • Familiarity with the library-related marketplace, to include content, technology, tools, and systems;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

The position requires primarily sedentary work, including exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time with no adverse environmental exposure.  The position also includes the following physical requirements:

 

  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Pulling. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Required to lift and maneuver boxes of books, journals, and other library materials.
  • Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
