Arizona State University

Dean of Humanities

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Tempe, AZ

Arizona State University (ASU), the most innovative university in America, seeks a creative and energetic leader and scholar to serve as its next Dean of Humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The division of humanities plays a critical role in ASU’s educational mission, exposing students to disciplinary breadth and depth across the humanities. Today, the division is poised for a new era of growth and distinction, and its next Dean will have an unparalleled platform from which to shape humanities education and scholarship in the 21st century at ASU and beyond.

A leading public university based in the metropolitan Phoenix area, ASU is realizing a bold reinvention of higher education as the New American University. Under the leadership of President Michael Crow, ASU has developed numerous programs and units that bridge and transcend disciplinary boundaries to enable the exploration and discovery of new knowledge while developing solutions to serve Arizona and the world at large. The university has strong and simultaneous commitments to educational access, research, and teaching excellence, and assumes significant responsibility for the cultural, social, and economic vitality of its surrounding communities. This strategy is built around intellectual fusion, use-inspired research, and scholarship that addresses the largest and most essential social problems of today. In particular, the university aspires to be second to none in its commitment to access and success for students of every background. ASU’s charter declares that it will be “measured not by whom we exclude, but by whom we include and how they succeed.”

The humanities are foundational to ASU’s mission, and to that end, the humanities division offers an expansive suite of programs that equip students to think critically, communicate effectively, and gain a global perspective to best tackle challenges in today’s world. The division has evolved over the years in response to the needs of students, pioneering new degrees and online programs, and engaging in cross-cutting, change-making research activities.

The incoming Dean of Humanities will have the opportunity to redefine the model for humanities education across different media, in service to an incredibly diverse student body, while advancing research and practice at the highest level. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and to the Executive Vice President and University Provost, the Dean of Humanities will join a leadership team working to shape the future direction and vision of ASU’s largest and most diverse college. This position calls for an entrepreneurial academic leader who can drive bold new initiatives, support the faculty in their research and teaching, and cross disciplines and boundaries to build collaborations that will transform the humanities at ASU and nationally.

Screening of complete applications will begin immediately and continue until the completion of the search process. Inquiries, nominations, referrals, and CVs with cover letters should be sent via the Isaacson, Miller website for the search: www.imsearch.com/6214. Electronic submission of materials is required.
