Executive Director

Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty

www.shepherdconsortium.org

Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP) began in 1998 as the “Shepherd Poverty Alliance,” a poverty studies program founded by Washington & Lee University (W&L) and allied with Berea College and Spelman College.  In July 2012, SHECP was formally established as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit consortium, with the singular goal of expanding and improving the sustained, interdisciplinary study of poverty at colleges and universities in the United States.

SHECP seeks a mission-driven Executive Director.  The Executive Director will join SHECP at an important moment in its history.  To support the critical work of SHECP, the successful candidate will be an energetic, entrepreneurial leader and fundraiser who will further inspire the SHECP Council and its Governing Board.

The Executive Director will work closely with the Council and the Governing Board to assist in the conceptualization, shaping, execution, and funding of SHECP’s strategic vision for the future. The Executive Director will be responsible for the ongoing development, refinement, and implementation of the strategic plan to realize the fundraising goals, operational plan, and ambitions of SHECP.  The Executive Director will oversee a staff of three direct reports – Academic Director, Director of Development, and Assistant Director and Coordinator of Internships – and will work to develop work plans that align with the strategic plan and resources. S/he will further enhance the Mission, plan strategically, advocate passionately, inspire historic growth and philanthropy, and lead effectively.

The Executive Director will be responsible for creating a sustainable plan which increases resources, visibility of the consortium, and expands the offerings available for students. The ideal candidate will be comfortable navigating higher education, capable of strong strategic leadership, and fostering and increasing strategic relationships with key donors.

S/he will have the stature and experience to inspire the confidence of internal and external constituencies, and the proven ability to creatively engage and motivate faculty, the Council, Consortium members, Governing Board, volunteers, prospects and donors.  The ideal candidate will be an inspirational and compassionate leader, rooted by genuine and deep respect for human dignity, and possesses a sincere commitment to the work of SHECP.

SHECP is headquartered in Lexington, VA.  The entrepreneurial nature of this role and SHECP’s donor base allows for flexibility of the location of the Executive Director.
