The Student Employment Coordinator oversees all processes of the Office of Student Employment including on-campus student employment, developmental outreach and training to students and their supervisors, providing a leadership role for the Federal Work Study Program, identifying off-campus jobs, and hosting events for students to connect and network with off-campus employment opportunities. This position will communicate with students, faculty, employers, and student supervisors to provide information on all areas of student employment as well as to give advice to students regarding resume development, job selection processes, and employment choices in keeping with the student’s career goals. The Student Employment Coordinator supervises the Processing Assistant and reports directly to the Associate Director of the Career Development Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement job location development by creating off-campus employment opportunities for a student body of 18,000 students at Appalachian State University.
  • Serve as the point of contact for 4500 on-campus student employees and their parents, 200+ staff and faculty regarding issues student temporary employment.
  • Serve as lead for the centralized processing of I-9 and E-Verification for new student temporary employees according to US Department of Homeland Security specifications.
  • Identify employment sites and positions that meet the guidelines of the Federal Work Study (FWS) Program; assist students and supervisors in selection process for approximately 400 FWS students each year; conduct evaluations of the FWS Program in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Coordinate On-campus, Odd Jobs, and Part-Time employment postings.
  • Provide one-on-one counseling to students seeking career advice on student employment and resume critiques.
  • Provide consultation to student supervisors seeking advice on managing students towards success; provide assistance to students and supervisors for conflict resolution when needed; provide training to student supervisors on student employment laws and best hiring practices.
  • Provide training and outreach programming to students to enhance their understanding of transferable skills and the importance of student employment to their overall professional development plan and career readiness.
  • Plan and host Student Employee Appreciation events and Part-Time, Summer Job fairs.
  • Ensure Student Employment initiatives are in alignment with overall Career Development Center goals. 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree preferred in Business, Human Resources, Counseling, Student Development, Higher Education, or an appropriate related field. At least 2 years experience in student services, employee recruiting experience, or human resources. Demands excellent problem solving and oral and written communication skills; ability to interpret and implement policy and procedures; and ability to work in fast-paced team atmosphere. Experience counseling students and/or employees in a university setting is a plus.

This is a permanent twelve month position. Suggested salary range for this position is $40,000 - $45,000. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and State of North Carolina benefits apply. Anticipated starting date is August 1, 2017.
