Executive Director for Advancement

When Thomas Jefferson designed the University of Virginia, he placed its library in the Rotunda, at the symbolic and literal center of his plan. In 1938, the Alderman Library opened to house the University's growing research collections. Today, the University Library encompasses 9 locations and is internationally known for its extensive special collections as well as for innovative programs to support digital humanities, data sciences, and digital preservation. As the University prepares to celebrate its bicentennial, the University of Virginia Library is seeking a fundraising professional with a proven record of success to lead development efforts in the new role of Executive Director for Advancement.

The Executive Director will be a member of the Library's leadership team and work directly with the Dean to develop strategic goals and fundraising priorities, which will include the renovation of Alderman Library as part of the University's Bicentennial Capital Campaign. He/she will lead the Library's Advancement team to engage prospects, to collaborate with faculty and staff within and beyond the Library, and to develop and implement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans for annual giving, major gift solicitations, and other fundraising efforts. As a front-line fundraiser, the Executive Director for Advancement will develop and manage a portfolio of current and prospective major-gift level donors ($100K+) and move them towards giving levels that achieve annual and long-range fundraising goals of the University Library. The bicentennial celebrations will provide a unique opportunity to leverage the Library's singular role in documenting the University's history, and to engage donors in the opportunity to shape a new library for the University's third century.

The successful candidate will have at least four years of demonstrated success in fundraising, ideally in a higher education or library setting, and possess a high degree of initiative and creativity, the ability to lead and inspire others, and the skills to engage donors with a passion for stewarding scholarship and the cultural record.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree; Considerable experience - 4 to 7 years; Demonstrated experience in fundraising or relationship management involving successful cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects, donors or clients.
Preferred: Master's degree; Considerable - 4 to 7 years; Progressive fundraising and volunteer management experience in an institution of higher education. Supervisory experience, especially in fundraising, stewardship, or client-focused sales. Demonstrated major gift fundraising experience. Experience in library or museum fundraising. Ability to develop relationships of trust and respect with donors and colleagues. High level of personal and professional integrity, personal initiative, and an ability to work effectively with little supervision. Ability to lead and mentor supervisees and balance individual accountability with team success. Adaptable, agile and versatile, ability to accept diverse world view, value, politics and lifestyles exhibited by prospective donors and colleagues. Ability to solve problems, adapt to changing context and navigate ambiguity. Excellent verbal and written communication with attention to detail and appropriate documentation. Ability to frequently travel domestically with overnight stays; and able to work some weekends and evenings.
