Associate Director of Psychology Advising and Undergraduate Academic Operations

The Psychology Department is currently searching for an Associate Director of Psychology Advising and Undergraduate Academic Operations, a professional faculty position that assists the Director of Academic Operations in providing leadership and oversight to academic advising services to the Department's 1700 undergraduate majors, including the coordination of the undergraduate advising center, the training and supervision of graduate student assistant advisors, developing online coursework related to advising, and other duties as assigned. The position assists the Director of Academic Operations as needed and reports to the Director of Academic Operations. Some nights and weekends required. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Responsibilities include:

  • Day to day operations of PSYUGRAD Advising
  • Supervise and train GTAs and/or professional advisors in all matters related to academic advising for 1700 Psychology majors, following best practices as outlined by NACADA and APA.
  • Coordinate Transfer Student Orientation
  • Coordinate undergraduate graduation applications for majors and minors
  • Coordinate Research Days (Fall, Spring) and subsequent registration
  • Develop and deploy advising campaigns in conjunction with Student Success Collaborative
  • Develop and teach online "Discovering the Major: Psychology" course to students and to revise the course for transfer students
  • Advise undergraduate students, assisting them in educational and career planning, understanding requirements for the major, navigating university processes and procedures, and referring to university resources
  • Keep current and share with GTAs and peers new technology, programs, etc., related to online instruction initiatives
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Academic Operations and provide feedback on advising and advisors
  • Anticipate potential advising issues and proactively address
  • Must liaise with Transfer center, College Dean's office, Career Center, University Counseling Center, and other units as needed
  • Communicate clearly with student body and maintain department Blackboard organization
  • Work with Director of Academic Operations to establish required actions for students and clearly communicate requirements to students
  • Assist Director of Academic Operations and Director of Undergraduate Programs with current and prospective student-related events (Open Houses, Preview Days)
  • Coordinate and deliver the Department's participation in transfer orientation
  • Maintain confidential records
  • Provide professional communication to faculty, staff, students and administrators
  • Demonstrated expertise with Banner, DegreeWorks, Student Success Collaborative,
  • Blackboard, large data sets (Excel and SPSS), Google (Docs, Forms, Spreadsheets),
  • PowerPoint with recorded narrations, Camtasia, and other relevant programs
  • Must be knowledgeable of FERPA requirements
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a team

This position requires professional discretion. The successful candidate will have access to detailed student records and must maintain strict confidentiality. This position requires attention to detail. This person helps students make academic decisions which impact degree progress, financial expenditures, future plans and must understand the impact of his/her actions in this capacity.


The successful candidate will have:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling or related field along with a professional or academic background in Psychology
  • 3 years of experience in progressively responsible roles in higher education advising, Psychology preferred
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience developing and teaching online coursework.
  • Sensitivity to equity and diversity.
  • Experience working in a high volume academic unit. Demonstrated ability to thrive when multi-tasking.
