The Coordinator of Cataloging and Metadata Services provides vision and serves as the lead for bibliographic metadata practices and policies at the University of Denver Libraries. In addition, the Coordinator works closely with librarians and staff throughout technical services areas in order to evaluate and iteratively improve workflows in the library management system (LMS). This position prepares the catalog for the future of bibliographic description, exploring new standards in metadata, linked data, the semantic web, and regional and national systems of print repositories. As a supervisor the Coordinator strives to create a rewarding workplace for an experienced team of catalogers.

 

This position oversees all aspects of cataloging and bibliographic and authority control, including cataloging in all formats using OCLC and Ex Libris Alma system; manages catalog and bibliographic metadata creation and maintenance; develops and implements cataloging policies and procedures; supervises cataloging staff performing original and complex copy-cataloging; and coordinates both regular workflow and metadata projects in collaboration with the Metadata and Digitization Librarian. DU Libraries migrated to Alma in 2016, and this position serves as a key resource in understanding and troubleshooting issues that arise both as a result of migration and ongoing changes in systems compatibility. Faculty at DU actively engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, and participate in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees. The organization also strives to intentionally integrate diversity and inclusiveness into all aspects of the library.

 

Essential Functions

  • In accordance with international and national standards and best practices, develop and maintain local policies for original and complex copy-cataloging in all formats and multiple languages.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations concerning emerging metadata standards in the LMS.
  • Plan, organize, and evaluate the LMS workflows (particularly as they relate to cataloging) to maximize efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of the other library departments and of library users.
  • Support, engage, hire, train, and supervise cataloging staff.
  • Provide guidance and direction on issues relating to cataloging rules and procedures.
  • Manage metadata projects including workflow, and monitor project outcomes.
  • Maintain statistics and develop reports on activities of the cataloging department.
  • Oversee catalog maintenance activities, including metadata loads, record source management, and database quality control issues as they relate to bibliographic and item-level access to library resources.
  • Manage authority control, including maintaining knowledge of authority control management procedures and updating to creating local authority records.
  • Serve as a key resource in understanding and troubleshooting issues in the LMS that impact searching and discoverability.
  • Participate in cross-departmental committees and working groups as assigned.
  • As a library faculty member, work in accord with the promotion guidelines, and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication; participating in national and regional professional organizations; and serving on library and campus committees.
