The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Media and External Affairs is charged with strategically promoting university news and accomplishments and for issues management at Vanderbilt University.

 

The AVC has the primary responsibility for developing the vision and strategy for the media and external affairs team at the direction of the Vice Chancellor for Communications and in support of the university’s strategic priorities. He or she works to elevate the stature, reputation and positive positioning of the university in national, global and local media environments across digital and traditional channels. He or she also is responsible for identifying and managing sensitive issues as they emerge from inside or outside the university in partnership with the university’s senior leaders.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively develops and executes communications plans that support and advance the university’s strategic priorities and key narratives with external audiences and the media

  • Leads development of innovative, multi-media storytelling approaches and campaigns that are promoted across platforms and tailored to engage specific audiences

  • Cultivates a national and international network of media contacts and leads proactive pitching of institutional breakthroughs, new research, faculty expertise and student accomplishments to garner coverage reaching national and global audiences and to further enhance the Vanderbilt’s reputation as a thought-leader and premier research institution

  • Proactively coordinates with university leadership, faculty and college and school communicators to identify potential media and promotion opportunities

  • Leads exploration of non-traditional tools for engaging media and other audiences in university news including content marketing, webinars, live chats, audience-generated content, events and more

  • Leads active social media monitoring and engagementsocial media for news and issues management functions

  • Develops and leads an effort to craft and place opinion pieces with top-tier third-party channels to elevate senior leadership, faculty and the university’s priority messages

  • Coordinates with all teams in the Division of Communications to develop an agile, nimble and responsive cross-platform story telling process and function

  • Leads communication planning and coordination with university leaders to manage sensitive issues and mitigate risk

  • Develop and oversee execution of specific strategic communications activities designed to amplify the university’s reputation and influence in public policy, scientific research and college athletics

     

    Professional Experience/Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing the development and execution of strategic communications efforts across traditional and digital platforms, including a wide array of tactics.

  • Demonstrated success in national and international media relations.

  • Demonstrated experience and success in issues management and crisis communications.

  • Experience working with senior leadership and supervising and managing employees in a news or communications organization.

  • A master's degree in journalism, communications, advertising and marketing, or a liberal arts degree with supplemental professional experience of at least six years in news management at a managing editor or director level or as a spokesperson or media relations director position for a higher education institution, K-12 metro school district, state or federal public agency, a non-profit organization or a private sector firm.

Basic Qualifications
This position requires a Master's and 8 years of experience or the equivalent.
