DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Division Dean plans,
organizes, and directs the academic, clinical, and administrative
elements of the School of Nursing.
Distinguishing Career Features
The Director for the School of Nursing is an academic
management position that administers the programs and courses
offered culminating in certificates, degrees, and the pathways to
licensure. These programs and curriculum are supported with
clinical simulations and practicum. The Director is
responsible for complying with the guidelines and criteria
established by the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and
Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may
include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Plans, organizes, and directs Nursing education as
well as closely related disciplines. Assures compliance with
BRN and ACEN and participates in developing policies and procedures
related to the accreditation of these and other healthcare
programs.
• Oversees the recruitment, selection, admission, and
academic progression of students in the program. Monitors
satisfactory academic progression and reviews students' records for
advancement to higher levels of nursing education, e.g., LVN to
RN.
• Establishes standards for academic and clinical
performance for permanent and adjunct faculty. Ensures that
faculty maintains required licensure and clinical credentials.
• Facilitates the development of revised and new
curriculum and program elements that stay current with State
requirements for nursing practice.
• Directs and participates in the preparation and
assignment of class schedules and teaching assignments.
Supervises and evaluates performance of assigned staff and monitors
the credentials and teaching load of faculty.
Initiates, maintains, and renews articulation
agreements with universities. Initiates, maintains, and
renews agreements with agency clinical agreements. Serves as a
liaison between the college and health care industry serving the
community for planning, scheduling, and coordinating clinical
facility use agreements.
• Develops, assembles, and recommends annual budgets
by researching, reviewing, and analyzing historic information and
projecting future needs. Controls and authorizes expenditures
within the limitations of approved budgets.
• Provides leadership for program review including
process improvement and program development, systematic assessment
of student progress and learning outcomes.
• Directs and participates in preparation of a
variety of qualitative and quantitative reports, records, and files
related to Nursing and healthcare practice and program
accreditation.
• Initiates and participates in sourcing, preparing,
applying and managing grant proposals. Administers grant
awards.
• Collaborates with faculty within and outside of
Nursing, to advance the program and blend other allied health care
education and training. • Actively evaluate, consider, and
promote other healthcare related programs that could be initiated,
developed, and integrated at the College.
• Attends continuing education and conferences to
maintain licensure and provide creativity and innovation to the
Nursing Program.
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the
overall objective of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Advanced practice in nursing
theory, principles, procedures, methods, and protocols.
• Laws, codes, regulations, and practices related to
nursing including BRN and ACEN requirements.
• Principles of program leadership, supervision, and
staff development.
• State laws and regulations related to licensure,
certification, and accreditation.
• Computer-aided applications such as those used for
documenting patient activity and recording statistics.
• Well-developed human relations skills to build an
effective team, conduct lectures, work productively and
cooperatively with faculty and nursing students, and conduct in
service clinical training.
• Sufficient math skills to perform statistical
tests.
• Advanced writing skills to prepare diagnostic
reports.
Ability to:
• Carry out the objectives of the
position and perform a full range of advanced professional nursing
skills including, but not limited to examination, diagnosis,
treatment, and invasive procedures as authorized by nursing
practice.
• Recommend innovative changes to the program and
convert emerging trends in nursing practice to curriculum and
practicum.
• Prepare professional quantitative and qualitative
reports.
• Set up, organize, lead, and perform health care
services in a clinic or acute care environment.
• Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to
socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity of staff and
students.
• Maintain all necessary licenses.
Education and Experience:
1. As minimum qualifications for service as an
educational administrator shall be both of the following:
• Possession of a master's degree; and
• One year of formal training, internship, or
leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's
administrative assignment.
2. The director of the program shall meet the
following minimum qualifications:
• A master's or higher degree from an accredited
college or university which includes course work in nursing,
education or administration;
• One (1) years' experience as an administrator with
validated performance of administrative responsibilities consistent
with section 1420(h);
• Two (2) years' experience teaching in pre- or
post-licensure registered nursing programs; and
• One (1) year continuous, full-time or its
equivalent experience in direct patient care as a registered nurse;
or
• Equivalent experience and/or education, as
determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
3. Possess a combination of education and experience
that is at least the equivalent of the above. Candidates
making application on the basis of equivalency must submit an
Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required
materials.
4. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse
academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity,
sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college
students.
Licensing and Certifications:
Possess or be eligible for a current and active
license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of
California issued by the Board of Registered Nursing.
May require a valid California driver's license.
Conditions of Employment
This is a contract, full-time, 12-month per year,
Educational Administrator position. The normal hours of work will
be 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Flexible schedule and
weekends might be necessary to address the needs of the job duties,
programs and/or students. The effective date of employment will be
arranged with the supervisor.
Regular attendance is considered an essential job
function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may
preclude the employee from retaining employment.
The person holding this position is considered a

Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set
forth in Coast Community College District policies, procedures, and
