The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is seeking an Instruction & Curriculum Engagement Coordinator to lead in planning, providing, and assessing curriculum-integrated library instruction across all disciplines. As a member of Research & Instructional Services, the Coordinator supports Atkins Library's teaching librarians in designing online and face-to-face instruction that helps students learn to search, read, think, and contribute in an engaged and iterative research process. The Coordinator also engages with academic programs and curricular initiatives on campus to advocate for high-quality research instruction.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is a rapidly growing research intensive University offering over 28,500 students a variety of undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs in seven academic colleges. UNC Charlotte's Atkins Library is a comprehensive research library with over 1.9 million printed books, 930,000 e-books, over 400 databases, approximately 75,000 journals and an annual budget of over $10 million.

UNC Charlotte is located in the largest city in North Carolina, a beautiful southern city of 775,202 with over 1.5 million in the greater metropolitan area, in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. Located on a 1,000 acre wooded campus, the University is accessible to the city's performing arts and cultural and sports events and to recreational lakes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates the development, assessment, marketing, and delivery of the UNC Charlotte library instruction program in collaboration with teaching librarians.
  • Develops and promotes tiered instruction for curriculum integration.
  • Supervises the First Year & Online Instruction Librarian and two Reference and Instruction Associates.
  • Leads instructional librarians and staff in creating goals and objectives for the Instruction program.
  • Encourages teaching librarians and staff to experiment and take risks, to try new approaches and technologies, and to share experiences and materials.
  • Creates a framework for reflective teaching practices and a continuously improving instruction program.
  • Provides support, guidance, and coaching in best practices and pedagogy to all library staff who provide instruction, orientations, or tours.
  • Identifies and provides training opportunities for librarians involved in the Instruction program, and for other teaching faculty at UNCC.
  • Coordinates assessment of instruction program and learning outcomes to measure impact on University curriculum and student success.
  • Manages and improves instructional space in the library.
  • Contributes to the development of instructional and informational resources (e.g. LibGuides, Moodle blocks, assessments, tutorials, social media applications) for in-person and online learning.
  • Teaches library research instruction sessions to undergraduates and graduate students in assigned programs and subject areas.
  • Maintains a research agenda encompassing best practices and innovations in library instruction.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serves as liaison to designated academic departments to provide instruction, research, and collection support; participates in the provision of in-person and virtual research services and of instruction for first-year undergraduate students
  • Engages in professional service and scholarly contributions; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Library Science or equivalent from a program accredited by the American Library Association
  • At least 5 years of experience providing, promoting, and assessing instructional services in academic libraries
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating within and outside the library to create an environment supportive of interdisciplinary research and discovery

  • Additional advanced degree
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community
  • Evidence of creativity, innovation, and leadership in library instruction.
  • Evidence of a commitment to the librarian's teaching role in the University
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the curricular climate of the University
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a diverse team environment
  • Knowledge of professional, pedagogical, and technological issues as they apply to current assignment
  • Ability to work effectively in an organization in which change is both necessary and constant
  • Evidence of intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and reflective practice
  • Evidence of professional growth potential through publication, professional activities, or other contributions to the field
  • Participation in ACRL Immersion or other information literacy teaching and program planning training experience
