The Columbia Law School Assistant Dean (“Assistant Dean”) for Social Justice Initiatives and Public Service Lawyering develops and implements a strategic vision to inspire and prepare students and graduates for careers in public service at U.S. domestic, foreign, and international not-for-profit organizations, government, judicial clerkships, or pro bono service in the private sector (collectively referred to as “public service”). The Assistant Dean is responsible for creating and sustaining a dynamic public service program and interacting closely with Columbia Law School students, faculty, alumni, relevant centers and institutes, and administrative departments. The position also requires significant engagement with public interest and public sector communities, organizations, and individuals. The Assistant Dean is a principal Columbia representative to professional associations and other organizations regarding public service professional development, careers, and related issues. The Assistant Dean will manage a 10-person staff and serve as an integral member of the senior administrative management team. He/she reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs Administration.

 

The incumbent will guide and enhance all aspects of Columbia Law School’s public service and public interest programming. This leadership includes developing and sustaining community-building activities and programs and supporting effective and innovative career development, including counseling, professional development workshops, and employer engagement for current students and alumni interested in public service. The Assistant Dean will collaborate with the Office of Career Services to develop comprehensive and integrated resources for students and graduates. He/she will also engage in fundraising, communication, and external activities to support social justice and public service at Columbia Law School.
