Note: This position will be coded as a full-time Assistant Professor - Clinical Educator Track, with a primary appointment in SOM but CLAS will pay 50%

Job Duties and Responsibilities (50% SOM, 50% CLAS):

 

SOM (0.5 FTE): 

FPH 7440 Practicum Course Director for the MPH Program:  teach FPH 7440 every semester (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer) for CEPH accredited MPH program. Our program currently has approximately 45 students in Practicum placements per year and a minimum of 135 Practicum hours are required for the MPH practicum.

  • Responsibilities include: a) orienting students to the Practicum requirements; b) identifying and maintaining community placement opportunities for the students, and recruiting new sites as needed; c) evaluating student performance and assessing student achievement of course competencies.
  • Serve as academic advisor to assigned MPH students.
  • Engage in scholarly work related to public health practice.
  • Participate on MPH committees

 

CLAS (0.5 FTE):

PH 4100/PH 4150 Practicum Course Director for BSPH Program: teach PH 4100/4150 every semester (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer) for BSPH program. Our program currently has approximately 175 students enrolled in the major and it is estimated that, with the current number of majors, approximately 50-100 students may need to go through the practicum course per year. The first semester that the Practicum course will be offered is Spring/Summer 2017. A minimum of 90 Practicum hours are required for the BSPH practicum. PH 4100/4150 also includes a co-requisite, in-person course taught by the Practicum Director so that undergraduates can get the necessary professional development for their Practicum experience.

  • Responsibilities in PH 4100/4150 will include: a) orienting students to the Practicum requirements; b) providing necessary professional development to the undergraduate to parallel their field experiences; c) identifying and maintaining community placement opportunities for the students, and recruiting new sites as needed; d) evaluating student performance and assessing student achievement of course competencies.
  • Engage in scholarly work related to public health practice.
  • Participation on BSPH committees

 

Other duties:

  • Teaching load: 2-2-2 (all practicum)
  • Work with administrative and practicum staff in both SOM and CLAS to maintain and monitor student practicum placements and upkeep relationships with practicum sites
  • Work with the Directors of both programs to make sure that the practicum courses at the undergraduate and graduate level continue to meet with the objectives of each program
  • Support WSU Office of Public Health Practice that serves both the MPH and BSPH programs.

The School of Medicine (SOM) and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at Wayne State University invite applications for a 12-month Practicum Director for Public Health Programs starting April 15, 2017.

 

  • At minimum, applicants should have a Master’s degree in Public Health. A doctorate in Public Health (DrPH) or a related field is preferred. Applicants must also have background in public health practice.
  • The person hired for this position will be appointed in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences in SOM, and an appropriate social science or life science department in CLAS, with 50% time in each unit.
  • The individual hired for this position will work under the supervision of the Program Director(s) for the Bachelors in Public Health (BSPH) program in CLAS and the Masters in Public Health (MPH) program in SOM at Wayne State.
  • The person hired for this position will develop, coordinate, and oversee all practicum experiences for students in the MPH and BSPH programs.
  • The teaching load for this position is two practicum courses (one undergraduate and one graduate) in Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer (for a total of 6 courses per year, or 2-2-2).
  • As part of their application, candidates should upload their curriculum vitae, a description of practice experience, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and names of three references. At least one referee should work in a public health practice setting.
