Job Summary:

The Director of Development for University Initiatives will secure private and voluntary support for the University of Texas at Arlington from alumni and friends for University Initiatives. Identify, qualify and cultivate potential major gift donors and prepare solicitations for those individuals; solicit them with volunteer or academic leadership assistance if necessary; ensure proper recognition and stewardship is given to those who give. Collaborate with colleagues in Development and Alumni Relations to secure gifts for University-wide funding priorities and other special projects as assigned. Manage a portfolio of 100-150 potential or actual donors.

Essential Duties:

  1. Responsible for management of 100-150 potential or actual donors. Make personal contact, including in-person visits, with individuals and, when appropriate, corporate representatives and foundation officers to build relationships and secure philanthropic support.
  2. Work closely with the Assistant Vice President for Development and University Initiatives to complete fundraising projects related to University Initiatives and Presidential priorities. Also work collaboratively with colleagues in Development and Alumni Relations including, other development officers, Corporate and Foundation Relations, Annual Giving, and Gift and Estate Planning to determine funding priorities and potential funding sources for University priorities. Work closely with the Prospect Coordination and Research team to identify new prospects and perform regular portfolio maintenance.
  3. Provide leadership for University Initiatives and participate in team based fundraising efforts that advance the mission and strategic vision of the University.
  4. Collaborate with faculty and administration to determine funding priorities and potential funding sources for various academic programs as well as provide development support for fundraising opportunities.
  5. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Proficiency in Outlook, Excel, Word. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent analytical, organizational, time management and leadership skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 to 7 years of experience in major gift fundraising and with a solid track record of securing gifts at major level.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies;
  • a very strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through, and a strong commitment for University and School’s mission and values;
  • superior communication skills with ability to speak credibly about higher education and the aspirations of the University with clarity, succinct and effectiveness in written and oral presentations;
  • must travel extensively to participate regularly in events and activities;
  • experience working with volunteers;
  • the ability to manage complex relationships and be a proven collaborator with teamwork skills;
  • ability to work in a system that emphasizes measurable objectives, including set goals for major gifts activity and dollars raised;
  • knowledge of gift planning instruments and to market them to alumni and other prospective donors is desired.
  • Must have strong leadership experience.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Over 7 years of experience in major gift fundraising with a proven track record of success securing gifts at the six-figure level and higher;
  • strong experience in leading a team (fundraising staff and volunteers);
  • prior work history at a higher education institution;
  • experience with capital campaigns;
  • the ability to work with a diverse student body, staff, and constituents is preferred.
