The Collat School of Business at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a full or associate professor, tenure-track faculty position in Innovation and Entrepreneurship beginning Fall 2018. Candidates may come from a range of business-related disciplines, but must have a strong record of research, teaching and service activities in innovation and entrepreneurship. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of entrepreneurship, we are open to applicants from all areas of business scholarship and all research methodologies. The appointee will be a member of one of the academic departments at the Collat School of Business, and will become a faculty representative in the Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This career opportunity will enable the appointee to use his/her strategic and visionary skills to lead the School, University and Health System towards a transformational cross-disciplinary experience for students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and the Birmingham community.
Entrepreneurship represents an area of significant potential within
the School and the University.
The ideal candidate must have an active program of high impact research and teaching in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. In addition, the ideal candidate should have a demonstrated track record of success in leading and/or developing entrepreneurship-related programs, a record of engagement in the startup community, and a vision for future program development. The appointee will be expected to grow our existing academic programs, take a leadership role in the creation of curricular opportunities for all majors, and pursue the development of a new major in Entrepreneurship.
The ideal candidate will be recognized nationally for research in innovation and/or entrepreneurship. This person will champion scholarship in innovation and entrepreneurship for the Collat School of Business, and support faculty across disciplines to envision how innovation and entrepreneurship can be relevant to all academic disciplines. The appointee will also be expected to help frame our current research strengths with an innovation/entrepreneurship lens.
The endowed chair will be an enthusiastic, charismatic leader who will work closely with the Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to marshal colleagues, students, alumni, and entrepreneurs from on and off-campus to build an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the context of a major academic medical center. Therefore, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability and ongoing desire to actively engage across academic and community boundaries and explore new partnerships and programs in entrepreneurship.
UAB fosters an active and thriving innovation ecosystem. We have
a unique mix of expertise, resources and programs, including NSF’s
I-Corps program and Stanford’s University Innovation Fellows
program that align well with the campus culture of
interdisciplinary innovations. By summer 2018, we will be completed
with the construction of a new home for innovation and
entrepreneurship in the Birmingham community, which will jointly
house the Collat School of Business and the Harbert Institute for
Innovation and Entrepreneurship. With a student accelerator at
Innovation Depot, one of the leading business incubators in the
world within blocks of the new building, UAB is the major catalyst
for entrepreneurship and innovation in central Alabama. Our vision
is that this endowed chair will enhance our research culture in
entrepreneurship and take advantage of existing activities across
campus to accelerate growth of premier programs to educate the next
generation of entrepreneurs.
