Boston Conservatory at Berklee is now accepting applications for the position of Chair of Instrumental Studies. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Berklee is the world's largest independent music college; the Boston Conservatory is the United States’ longest-established Conservatory, with undergraduate and master's programs in music/dance/theater. The two institutions merged in 2016. The Berklee community consists of over 5000 talented and diverse students, 840 internationally respected faculty, over 600 dedicated staff, and an extended family of alumni.

The Conservatory’s Instrumental Studies department incorporates wind, brass, strings, percussion and piano; the Chair oversees a team of around 60 full- and part-time faculty.

The candidate should be an outstanding musician with performance experience at a high level, and an experienced educator and effective administrator with a background of successful employment in a collegiate setting. Thorough understanding of a wide variety of music and national recognition as a musician are essential. A Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required.

 

Instrumental Studies

The Chair of Instrumental Studies oversees all Conservatory instrumental activities from individual applied lessons to the management of large ensembles, including orchestra, wind ensemble, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, chorale, sinfonietta, and ensembles required for Theater division and Dance division mainstage performances. Instrumental Studies comprises 16 full-time and 32 part-time faculty, providing applied lesson and ensemble instruction to over 200 Boston Conservatory at Berklee students.

This is a twelve-month position. Initial appointment is for three years and will start September 1, 2017, depending on availability. Compensation is commensurate with professional experience.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Management, supervision, and evaluation of instrumental area Program Directors
  • Supervision, evaluation, and development of faculty
  • Management of area budget and facilities
  • Management of instrumental and vocal large ensembles
  • Management, supervision, and evaluation of Ensembles Coordinator
  • Management, supervision, and evaluation of Instrument Librarian       
  • Coordinate casting in collaboration with program directors
  • Oversee scheduling for all large ensemble rehearsals and performances
  • Oversee hiring of guest conductors and soloists
  • In conjunction with Concert Services Manager, oversee production needs, including music rental, facilities, and transportation
  • Occasional teaching duties
  • Curriculum development as required
  • Collaborative activities with Berklee College of Music
  • Other duties as required by the Division Dean or the Vice President for Academic Affairs

 

Candidates should be effective administrators and experienced educators, preferably with a background of successful employment in a collegiate setting.  Thorough understanding of large ensemble needs, both artistic and logistical, is necessary. A Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
