"Transforming lives locally and globally through the creation, sharing and application of knowledge”

The University of Dundee is the UK’s most research-intensive medium-sized university, with an international reputation for excellence and impact. We are the top-ranked university for biological sciences research in the most recent Research Excellence Framework and top in Scotland for the STEM subjects and Art & Design.

We have the fourth highest proportion of research income to total income of any UK university, which speaks to our outstanding success in winning competitive grants and funding. We have been named one of Europe’s most innovative universities due to our track record in translating research into impact.

In 2017 the University is celebrating its 50th anniversary as an independent institution, and we reach this significant landmark having become:

  • one of the world’s top 200 universities (THE);
  • the Scottish University of the year for two years running (The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide);
  • one of the top ranked universities in the UK for student experience (National Student Survey).

The University is now seeking to appoint a new Vice-Principal (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Wider Impact). Reporting to the Principal and Vice-Chancellor and as a member of the University’s Executive Group, s/he will play a key role in delivering the University’s overall strategy. Through inspirational and strong leadership they will ensure the University’s continuing overall excellence in research performance and impact culture, championing and embedding increased interdisciplinarity across the University. Key responsibilities will include delivering REF 2021; proactively pursuing and addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by the Global Challenges Agenda; responding to the new UK Industrial Strategy and Brexit; ensuring the University is at the forefront of transformational research and impact activity.

Motivated by and committed to the values and ethos of the University, the new Vice-Principal will have a substantial national and international academic reputation combined with evidence of successful leadership. S/he will join a vibrant University Executive Group, making a full contribution to the institution’s wider ambitions and delivering on the new University Strategy. This is a stimulating post providing an opportunity to work with world-leading individuals and groups across a diverse and creative University research community.
