Appalachian State University seeks an experienced individual to provide budgeting and planning leadership as the Assistant Budget Director (ABD) for the University. This new ABD position will play a critical role in guiding the use of resources in supporting the strategic mission of the University. Reporting to the University Budget Director, the ABD will assist in advising Business Affairs executive managers and other university leaders in accounting, budget, and finance strategies, plans and policies.

Appalachian State University offers a challenging academic environment and an energetic campus life, combining the best attributes of a small liberal arts college with those of a large research university. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the 3,300-foot elevation provides cool summers, spectacular fall scenery, and excellent outdoor recreational opportunities. Known for its value and affordability, Appalachian enrolls approximately 18,000 students. Small classes and close interactions between faculty and students create a strong sense of community, which has become an Appalachian hallmark. Appalachian is one of 16 universities in the University of North Carolina system and is consistently recognized in such publications as US News & World Report, Forbes, Kiplinger, and Sierra magazine as one of the outstanding universities in the southeastern United States.

The primary responsibility of the ABD will be to conduct complex financial analyses and prepare detailed reports for executive leadership within Business Affairs.  This new position will help assist in developing and implementing new processes and procedures for various tasks, including budget allocations, tuition and fees submissions, and providing support to auxiliary units.  Furthermore, the ABD will be engaged in the business planning process, including evaluation of new construction projects/opportunities and public private partnerships. In order to accomplish these responsibilities, the position requires a person of high integrity with significant analytical experience in budgeting and financial management, preferably in higher education.

Desirable candidates will have significant experience in budgeting, forecasting and/or analytics, preferably in higher education, government, or the non-profit sector. A CPA or Master's degree is strongly preferred. The ABD will need to be able to manage multiple projects, work collaboratively with multiple constituents, and communicate broadly and effectively across the University and the University System. In addition, the ABD must have integrity, courage, great interpersonal skills, and the ability to think proactively, creatively, and strategically.

The individual who will be most successful in the ABD role is an analytical, collaborative, yet creative, accountant with a strong "can-do" work ethic. A partnership approach with colleagues on campus, with the University of North Carolina System, and with the North Carolina General Assembly is an essential ability, as is experience of creating and sustaining an environment of transparency and trust.

Interested individuals can apply through the university’s website at http://appstate.peopleadmin.com/postings/15304.  A completed application must include a cover letter, resume and contact information for at least three references including name, address, email address, and telephone number.
