EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND PROVOST

Utah State University (USU) invites nominations and applications for Executive Vice President and Provost. Utah State University is a Carnegie doctoral, higher research activity institution and Utah's land and space-grant university. Founded in 1888, USU was the first public residential campus in Utah. During the fall 2017 semester, main campus enrollment was over 28,000, including 16,272 undergraduates and 1,650 graduates. Off-campus locations, including four regional campuses, distance delivery sites across the state and USU Eastern (a comprehensive regional college with locations in Price and Blanding) enrolled a combined total of 10,200 graduate and undergraduate students. Research expenditures at Utah State University have been on the rise for several years and reached a record $244 million in the last fiscal year.

The university boasts an outstanding assemblage of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary research programs, centers, and initiatives such as the legislatively supported Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative (USTAR), the nationally renowned Space Dynamics and Utah Water Research laboratories, the Center for Persons with Disabilities, the Center for Integrated Biosystems, the Institute for Social Science Research in Natural Resources, and the inter-collegial Ecology Center. USU is also home to Utah Public Radio, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, the Fry Street Quartet, and outstanding performing and visual arts venues including the new Daines Concert Hall. Within the last several years, the university has experienced unprecedented growth in facilities with construction of 24 new buildings.

Dedicated and award-winning USU faculty, including 14 Carnegie Professors of the Year, NSF CAREER award recipients, Governor’s Medal of Science and Technology winners, and Fulbright scholars are scholar-educators who have a shared commitment to teaching excellence and rigorous research. The student/faculty ratio is 21 to 1, and the majority of faculty engage undergraduates in the second oldest undergraduate research program in the nation as well as in broad service learning experiences within the local community and across the globe. Undergraduate student enrollment has risen steadily in recent years, and projections are for continued and stable growth for decades to come. Prominent alumni include Nobel Prize-winning economist Lars Peter Hansen, astronaut Mary Louise Cleave and former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

As the university’s chief academic officer, the Executive Vice President and Provost reports directly to the president while overseeing the quality of academic programs and research through collaborative work with deans, department heads and other vice presidents. The successful candidate will work in close partnership with President Noelle Cockett to advance the university’s vision and agenda focused on student and faculty success, positive growth, and outstanding achievement of the institution’s land-grant mission. The Executive Vice President and Provost will capably and creatively leverage resources and expertise to deliver diverse educational programs to students with varied learning needs and goals across the entire USU academic enterprise, including its statewide regional campus system and USU Eastern.

This leader will value excellence and innovation by faculty with diverse roles in support of the university’s mission, assist colleges and schools with recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, and engage with faculty, students, and administration alike to develop and promote the highest quality academic programs and systems. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with extraordinary professional judgement and personal integrity who skillfully leads and inspires others to succeed in an environment of collegiality and collaboration. Toward that end, the Executive Vice President and Provost will value diversity in all forms and promote a campus culture of inclusivity.
