Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs

The College of Arts and Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research, Graduate Programs and Natural Sciences. Howard University, classified as a Doctoral University: Higher Research Activity institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is a comprehensive research university and a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). It is a residential campus of approximately 10,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

The College of Arts and Sciences consists of twenty academic departments grouped into the four divisions of Fine Arts, Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences offering Bachelors, Masters, and PhD programs, with over 380 full-time and 80 part-time faculty members. The Division of Natural Sciences includes the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Comprehensive Sciences, Health, Human Performance & Leisure Studies, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. Faculty members are very active in the profession and conduct pure and applied research.

 Position Description. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Dean of the college and provides college-wide leadership for, and oversight of all aspects the college’s research activity and graduate programs, and assists the dean in the administration of the Division of Natural Sciences. The associate dean will be expected to lead in the college’s efforts to increase external funding for research, and work with faculty, departments and the central administration to develop entrepreneurial research and economic development initiatives. The associate dean

  • Promotes and provides leadership for the development of high quality, innovative, research and graduate programs.
  • Works closely with the departments and the central administration to promote the successful development, submission and administration of research contracts and grants.
  • Acts as the college liaison to the Office of Research Development, Research Administration Services, and the office of Associate Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School
  • Assists in the development, regular review, and implementation of policies, standards and procedures that impact the college’s research and graduate programs. Examples include faculty startup packages, effort certification, and graduate assistantships.
  • Represents the College at campus and community events, and serves on standing and ad hoc committees where the presence of the Associate Dean is requested or required.

The successful candidate must have a record of scholarship, teaching, and professional service commensurate with the rank of Full Professor with tenure, in one of the natural science departments; demonstrate successful administrative ability and effectiveness in a research university; demonstrate an effective leadership style that respects the principles of shared governance; and demonstrate highly effective communication, and organizational skills, with attention to detail. Preferred qualifications include: experience in academic administration in a research university; the ability to inspire faculty to excellence in research and teaching; an entrepreneurial mindset; and experience with advancing interdisciplinary research projects across departments and colleges.

The preferred starting date is August 15, 2017 but is negotiable.
