Provost and Dean of the College

Washington College invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Dean of the College. Among the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, with a proud history of educating leaders since its founding in 1782 under the patronage of George Washington, Washington College provides a truly distinctive education to a student body of approximately 1500 undergraduates. It is a place where students learn to engage in processes of genuine creativity and discovery, developing the habits of liberal inquiry and effective civic engagement necessary to become leaders both locally and globally.

Washington College is located in historic Chestertown on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, 90 minutes from Baltimore, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. The College takes full advantage of its proximity to the nation’s capital and to the educational and co-curricular opportunities presented by the Chesapeake Bay. The College has established three centers of excellence which highlight key aspects of its identity: the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, the Center for Environment & Society, and the Rose O'Neill Literary House. It is also home to the Sophie Kerr Prize, the nation’s largest undergraduate literary prize. Washington College is developing a research, teaching, and learning initiative known as the Eastern Shore Food Lab with the mission to explore and create food system solutions that are economically, environmentally, and culturally sustainable. A new major in Communication and Media Studies, which will commence in Fall 2017, has been added to the College’s more than 40 majors and academic programs. In order to give more students access to this rich academic experience, President Sheila Bair has positioned the College as a leader in tackling issues of college affordability and student loan debt through a combination of innovative programs, including the guarantee of a tuition rate fixed for four years. President Bair is committed to building the academic program through multi-disciplinary learning, expansion of experiential education, partnerships with top-ranked graduate and professional schools, and institutional accountability for student success post-graduation. The College seeks a dynamic, visionary leader who can build upon its academic and programmatic strengths, promote the distinctive quality of its liberal arts education, and meet the educational challenges the College will face in the 21st century. The Provost and Dean of the College is the chief academic officer of the College and provides intellectual leadership and support for all academic departments and multi-disciplinary programs. The Provost and Dean of the College plays a central role in faculty recruitment, promotion, retention, and continuing professional development and works closely with the President and other members of the College's senior staff on budgetary, academic, strategic planning, and educational policy issues. The ideal Provost and Dean of the College will have a strong grasp of the pedagogical, technological, economic, and social challenges and opportunities currently facing liberal arts colleges, a deep commitment to a liberal arts education, and a clearly articulated vision for its future. He or she will work to continue the College's commitment to and success in faculty diversity and will have demonstrated the ability to work creatively and collaboratively with the faculty in matters of College governance. Candidates must have a strong academic record and national reputation, as well as proven track record as an administrator. They must have experience in college-wide curriculum assessment and evaluation and a focus on measurable student outcomes. Candidates must hold a terminal degree in their field and have a record of teaching success and scholarly or artistic accomplishment. Candidates must also qualify for appointment at the rank of tenured full professor in one of the departments of the College.
