In line with the foundational goals of the institutional Eyes High strategy, the University of Calgary is in the process of developing its Indigenous Strategy. The university is committed to creating a rich, vibrant and culturally competent campus – one that welcomes and supports Indigenous learners, is inclusive of Indigenous perspectives in teaching and learning, encourages Indigenous community partnerships in research and academic programming, and is appropriate and thoughtful in its response to the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action.

 

In March 2016, the university’s Indigenous Strategy Task Force – a steering committee and working group combined – was established to produce a strategy for the University of Calgary that will help to guide and shape the institution’s future with respect to indigenization, and help to create a culturally competent and engaging teaching, research and learning environment for the whole campus community. This strategy will be formally approved in the fall of 2017.

 

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President (Academic) the Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement) will play a critical strategic role in advancing and leading the implementation of the university’s Indigenous Strategy. The successful candidate will engage with Vice Provosts, Faculty Deans, Associate Deans, Department Heads, academic staff, staff, and students to champion the design and creation of Indigenous initiatives.  

 

The Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement) will provide inspirational, transformational, and visionary leadership for the University of Calgary’s Indigenous Strategy. In partnership with the Provost and in collaboration with other members of the university’s senior leadership team, the Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement) effectively involves Faculty and staff to support the university’s Indigenous strategic directions and to ensure the successful implementation of the plan.

 

The Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement) will have:

  • A master’s level education is required, with a preference for candidates with a doctorate. An outstanding record of scholarly achievement;
  • A proven track record of strategic leadership;
  • A track record of Indigenous leadership supporting and developing relevant initiatives and programs;
  • An understanding and appreciation of various research cultures, particularly Indigenous research methodologies and ways of knowing;
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships within and alongside Indigenous communities;
  • A commitment to the development and advancement of Indigenous inclusion;
  • A commitment to community-engaged research, teaching and learning; and
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language an asset.

The University of Calgary’s comprehensive benefits and pension program is designed to promote a productive level of health and well-being to staff members through coverage for health, dental, life insurance, income protection for disability, and retirement income planning. The salary range for this position is $184,000 to $230,000 per annum and will be negotiated based on the candidate’s skills and experience.
