The University of South Florida (USF) is located in the beautiful metropolitan area of Tampa Bay, the second largest metropolitan area in the state of Florida. USF was established in 1956 and since then has grown to be the largest public universities in the United States based upon student population. USF is striving to be a Global research university with over $450 million in research grants and contracts expenditures as reported through the National Science Foundation (NSF). USF also has a distinction as one of the top ten universities for patents and licenses. Since 2015, USF is ranked in the top 25 research universities in the United States.

The USF College of Pharmacy (USFCOP) was started in 2010, and subsequently has grown to approximately 150 employees, 46 full-time faculty, and over 300 voluntary faculty and preceptors. The USF College of Pharmacy (USFCOP) received its full accreditation with commendation for interprofessional education in 2015 and has already graduated two classes with greater than 90% passage rates on the NAPLEX exam.

The USF College of Pharmacy is part of the health sciences center at USF known as USF Health, which contains the Morsani College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Public Health, and the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitative Sciences. Recently USF Health also received provisional accreditation to initiate a Physician Assistant program.

The USF College of Pharmacy is conducting a nationwide search for a dynamic and accomplished individual to serve as Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (DPS) preferably at the rank of Full Professor. The successful candidate would also be eligible for consideration to a tenure-track, 12-month faculty position at the Professor Level. Preference will be given to the candidates who have attained tenure in their respective university (preferably with significant research focus) and a state University. The Chair will lead a department of 12 full-time faculty and three research faculty.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences has a diverse mission in providing educational support for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program as well as support the newly launched and growing graduate program in the College of Pharmacy. The USFCOP is significantly recognized within USF for its cultural diversity. The USF Health over the past decade has placed special emphasis on inter-professional clinical endeavors and inter-disciplinary bench and translational research. The ideal candidate should be a champion for such activities and will be expected to foster a collaborative environment as part of the leadership assignment at USFCOP.

The new chair is expected to encourage all of the DPS department faculty to collaborate closely with other departments throughout USF Health and USF at large. These collaborations may include bench research, clinical translational research, and social behavioral research. The USF College of Pharmacy is building strength in three major research areas:

  1. Cardiovascular research
  2. Neurosciences research
  3. Drug delivery with special focus on nano-drug delivery systems

It is expected that the new Chair has a track record of extramural federal funding, with preferably a minimum of one or two RO1 grants extending through the coming few years, and the ability to continuously attain such funding. The new Chair will also be expected to mentor, guide, and encourage the DPS department faculty to accomplish similar achievements in attaining federal funding.

The successful candidate will preferably have a doctoral degree in the pharmaceutical or basic sciences and possess exceptional interpersonal, leadership, and management skills. Candidates with a clinical doctoral degree with a strong history of basic science research and extramural grant funding are also encouraged to apply. The candidate must have strong academic credentials expected of the rank of full professor, with exemplary contributions in scholarly work, teaching, and service. It would be highly desirable for the candidate to hold additional qualifications such as management or Public Health to complement the job requirements. Significant experience and track record in the education of health professions and/or graduate students is a must.

As the senior administrator, the Chair of the Department is responsible for the strategic vision and direction, as well as leadership in the recruitment, development, mentoring, guidance and retention of faculty and staff appointed to the department.

Additional responsibilities of the Chair include budget preparation and fiscal management, generation of policies, procedures, & communications for the department, college, university, community and external stakeholders, and execution of faculty and staff annual performance evaluations and development.

An attractive package of startup, labs and possibly some faculty hires may be offered to the deserving candidate with an expectation that the department will in due course of time provide support through extramural funding in the next three to four years. The Chair will have access to significant research resources on the campus and will definitely be encouraged to enrich the DPS department through their extrovert abilities to do interprofessional and interdisciplinary research and education.
