Position Overview:

Under the direction of the President, the Vice President of Academic Affairs serves as the Chief Academic Officer and provides leadership and management to achieve a high standard of excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Vice President of Academic Affairs provides vision and overall guidance for academic policy and goal achievement and oversees educational planning; program development, management, and assessment; budget development and fiscal accountability; and personnel in the Academic Affairs division.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Minimum of one year full-time higher education curriculum teaching experience
  • Minimum of three years of higher education administrative experience at division level or above
  • Strong and documented ability to collaborate with and develop effective partnerships with internal and external groups

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Community college curriculum teaching experience
  • Community college administrative experience at division level or above
  • Knowledge and experience in workforce and economic development, adult education, curriculum and continuing education programs, and student support
  • Demonstrated use of technology in higher education
  • Experience in a regional accreditation process, such as SACSCOC
  • Demonstrated experience in managing departmental or divisional human, physical, and financial resources
  • Evidence of familiarity with and ability to schedule classes and coordinate faculty teaching load assignments to maximize student success and completion
  • Experience in design, development, implementation, and assessment of student learning and academic program outcomes
  • Knowledge of state and federal codes, statutes, and regulations that govern the North Carolina community college instruction

    • Develops new degree programs and options based on local and regional needs and the college strategic plan in compliance with the requirements of the North Carolina General Statutes and Community College State Board Code; the North Carolina Community College System Office; and institutional, regional, and national accreditation standards
    • Manages the operation and review of all academic affairs functions to ensure that the needs of students and the mission and vision of the college are met
    • Provides leadership for activities and events that build community and serve students and staff
    • Directs the preparation of the college calendar; coordinates the development of the instructional calendar, annual work calendar, and institutional report calendar in compliance with state requirements
    • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive records and information
    • Demonstrates strong leadership through evidence of proactivity, competence, integrity, continuous improvement, goal setting and achievement, team building, collaboration, and caring
    • Demonstrates knowledge of state and federal codes, statutes and regulations that govern North Carolina community college instruction and college-level policy and process
    • Establishes operational processes and makes necessary modifications based on analysis of operations, demographics, and other pertinent data
    • Directs the development and administration of a cost-effective budget for assigned functions; directs the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitors and approve expenditures; and makes midyear corrections

 

  • Contributes to college and system-wide planning and resource development
    • Understands and appreciates the mission of the community college and is able to relate it to all constituencies
    • Aids in making decisions consistent with the mission and goals of the college
    • Based on data-informed decision-making, demonstrates the ability to link resource allocation to planning and priorities while maintaining sound fiscal management, accreditation and strategic plan alignment, and academic excellence
    • Directs the curriculum review process including reviewing and approving new or revised programs, courses, and other academic activities and processes
    • Participates in college-wide and academic division-specific goal development and oversees goal progress, achievement, and reporting

 

  • Collaborates effectively with internal and external constituents to advance academic affairs and the college
    • Works effectively with community groups, educational entities, businesses, and government and legislative bodies to develop partnerships which result in improved service to students and to the community
    • Cultivates internal and external partnerships to develop new programs, garner resources, and better serve students and the community
    • Initiates joint programs with baccalaureate institutions
    • Leads initiatives to expand offerings to middle school and high school students
    • Works collaboratively with other vice presidents and members of the college leadership team
    • Engages in and supports the work of the SPCC College Foundation

 

  • Represents the college as the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) at meetings and conferences; serves as the CAO on committees, commissions, boards, and other groups

 

  • Makes presentations at meetings, workshops, and events as assigned

 

  • Advises the President on matters of academic affairs and other college-wide issues

 

  • Completes other duties as assigned by the President
