Georgia College & State University: Associate Dean of the College of Health Sciences

Georgia College & State University (Georgia College) seeks an innovative, collaborative, service-oriented leader as Associate Dean for the College of Health Sciences. The successful candidate will play a key role as a member of a dynamic Health Sciences administrative team that supports the Georgia College mission as the state’s designated public liberal arts university, university strategic goals and related initiatives. Reporting to the Dean of Health Sciences, the Associate Dean provides supportive leadership in the operations of the Dean’s Office in the pursuit of the College Mission/Vision. The Associate Dean works collaboratively with the College’s Administrative Team (School, Services, Center Directors and Department Chair) in the delivery of excellent academic and academic service related programs.

The College of Health Sciences provides evidence-based healthcare education programs across three academic units and one service unit: the School of Nursing, School of Health & Human Performance, the Creative Arts Therapies Department, and Health Services. The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nursing (BSN, RN-BSN, MSN-FNP/PMHNP, MSN-Nurse Education, and the DNP-Doctorate of Nursing Practice), Public Health (B.S.), Athletic Training (B.S. and M.S.), Outdoor Education (B.S.), Exercise Science, (B.S.), Health & Human Performance (M.S. – Human Performance or Health Promotion), Kinesiology/Physical Education-Teacher Certification (MAT), Music Therapy (BMT and MMT) and Art Therapy (MA). Minors offered by the College include: Global Health, Community Health, Physical Education, Outdoor Education, and Creative Arts Therapies. The College also supports patient centered, direct service clinics: the GC Student Health Clinic, the Music Therapy Clinic, and the Art Therapy Clinic. The Center for Health & Social Issues is also housed within the College. Total major enrollment across all academic programs in the College averages 1600 students.

Key Functions/ Responsibilities

  • Curricular Oversight of College Academic Programs.
  • Work with COHS academic and service leadership to facilitate college-wide coordination of the program development, implementation and assessment processes.
  • Assist with the cooperative and collaborative development and implementation of health and wellness programs and assist COHS academic units in the achievement of programmatic goals.
  • Serve as the College Assessment Coordinator and representative on the University Assessment Committee.
  • Serve as the college-level point person in working with the COHS academic units in Assurance of Learning plan implementation.
  • Oversee the development of college-level reviews of academic programs and necessary programmatic reports as needed.

  • Administrative Oversight of College Student Recruitment/Retention/Degree Completion.
  • Provide assistance to academic unit heads for the College’s student recruitment, enrollment, and retention initiatives.
  • Monitor student enrollment trends of COHS academic programs.
  • Coordinate efforts of academic units to implement proactive recruitment of a diverse student population in COHS degree programs.
  • Coordinate College-level Student Academic Affairs.
  • Oversee COHS academic petition and appeals policy compliance and procedure integrity.
  • Coordinate the processing of COHS complaints/grievances received, including initial response, follow up with complainant and the individual(s) involved and facilitation of resolution or issues in report.
  • Serve as college level reviewer for academic clinical and field placement agreement processes between the University and external entities (hospital, clinics, public health agencies, non-profit or community-based organizations, or corporate/private businesses).
  • Provide support to the College of Health Sciences Dean regarding necessary administrative operations, emergency/critical incidents, strategic planning and fiscal operations.
  • Represent the college in a professional and knowledgeable manner on internal and external committees, taskforces, workgroups, etc. as assigned.
  • Assist the Dean with budgetary planning processes, administrative meeting planning, and strategic planning.
  • Serve in a limited instructional or an academic administrative capacity as a faculty member in the appropriate degree discipline within the College.
  • Teaching, service, and scholarship responsibilities should be no more than six credit hours per semester during the academic year.
  • Teaching, service, and scholarship responsibilities should be no more than four credit hours across all summer terms.


Qualifications and Experience Requirements

Viable candidates must possess or demonstrate the following:

  • An earned terminal degree relevant to an academic program or degree offered within the College.
  • Experience as a university faculty member with credentials commensurate with senior faculty status (full professor rank).
  • Record of progressive experience in academic administration (attaining department chair or higher level at accredited universities).
  • Experience as an academic unit administrator with personnel direct report responsibilities.
  • Evidence of significant involvement in curricular development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Experience in supervising and directing a nationally accredited program(s) i.e. writing program approval or accreditation self-studies, annual reports, program reviews, coordinating site visits, writing rejoinders, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in SACS accreditation processes, and in unit, college, and university level strategic planning.
  • Significant level of administrative and programmatic experience in working with external partners establishing and implementing clinical and or field-based experiences.
  • Strong communications skills both written and verbal.
  • Evidence of working well with administrative support staff.

Preferred Attributes, Skills, Experience

Candidates who meet the essential requirements of the position and who also demonstrate the following will receive stronger consideration.

  • Five years (or more) experience serving as an academic department chair, school director, or division head in a field/discipline offered by College of Health Sciences.
  • Teaching and administrative experience at an accredited, public college or university.
  • Experience teaching at a liberal arts institution.
  • Success in achieving improvement in faculty and student diversity within a program, department, or college is desirable.

Appointment and Compensation

Full-time twelve (12) months fiscal year appointment.  Rank and salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
