The Associate Dean Academic Affairs (ADAA) is a key leader at the UW School of Nursing (SoN) who has responsibility for School of Nursing academic affairs including undergraduate and graduate programs and student support services. The ADAA works with curricular and student and academic services leaders to define policy development and application, program evaluation, facilitation of coordinated program functioning including strategic planning and evaluation.

The Associate Dean works with the Director of Student and Academic Services (SAS) to lead and support a high-functioning team seeking excellence in the provision of student services, including advising, admission, enrollment, orientation, course scheduling. This position provides leadership to ensure that our students have a positive experience at the UW SoN. This begins with prospective students and how we showcase our school – and also encompasses current students and their experience with us in the classroom, in academic advising, and in career counseling. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of nursing education and workforce needs.

The Associate Dean will also make broad-reaching decisions and recommendations to the Dean regarding the SoN’s engagement in the area of professional and leadership development, simulation, teaching and learning and overall strategic direction. This is a full time faculty position (75% FTE Associate Dean/25% FTE teaching/research/service).

RESPONSIBILITIES

LEADERSHIP:

  • Oversee Student and Academic Services activities and supervise, support, and evaluate personnel including:
  • Director of Student and Academic Services (100% FTE)
  • Director of the Center for Excellence in Nursing Education (100% FTE)
  • Director of Online Education (50%)
  • Program Directors (Faculty) 
  • Participate in the leadership of the School of Nursing through membership on the Executive Team and Shared Leadership Council.
  • Along with the Executive Dean, represent the School of Nursing at the Council on Nursing Education in Washington State (CNEWS)
  • Assist with agenda development and participate in the School of Nursing Clinical and Community Advisory Board (CCAB) and Chief Nursing Officers (CNO) meetings.
  • Oversee the undergraduate and graduate program directors who serve as ex-officio on School of Nursing curriculum committees.
  • Lead or sponsor school-wide academic and administrative initiatives such as the Undergraduate Curriculum Revision and Strategic Enrollment Management Plan (SEMP).
  • Serve as the UW School of Nursing liaison to the University of Washington Graduate School.
  • Interpret and inform the School of Nursing of national, state and local trends in nursing and nursing education.

CURRICULUM/ACCREDITATION:

  • Assure that the School of Nursing continues to be accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Oversee a successful program evaluation for accreditation at CCNE prescribed intervals.
  • Assure compliance with all relevant state and federal laws including Department of Health and AACN regulations.
  • Responsible for oversight of Ph.D. program accreditation.

STUDENT AND ACADEMIC SERVICES:

  • Manage and bring to resolution issues with students who do not meet Essential Behaviors.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources in the case of faculty/student issues that violate the student code of conduct.
  • Oversee the writing, submission, and management of grants that provide student financial support including but not limited to the HRSA Faculty Loan Program, the Robert Wood Johnson Top Scholars program, and Jonas Scholars.
  • Participate in UW Nursing Tri-Council monthly meetings and other Tri-Council related activities.
  • Oversee data collection and submission for external surveys and related inquiries for program data such as the US News and World Report ‘Best Graduate Schools’ report.
  • Monitor students’ progression through their respective academic programs and notify students of adequate or inadequate progression based on program benchmarks.
  • Maintain and build strong relationships and address issues with the consortium for undergraduate clinical site placements.
  • Oversee communication with the Nursing Certifications Assurance Commission (NCQAC) about substantive changes.
  • Address risk management related to academic issues.
  • Oversee the budget of Student and Academic Services.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of partnerships with internal and external stakeholders including CNEWs and CNOs and UW Health Science Associate Deans.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The candidate must be qualified for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in one of our three departments. Additionally, academic, administration, nursing education, and administration of educational programs experience is desirable. 


FACULTY APPOINTMENT AND COMPENSATION

This position will have a faculty appointment appropriate for the background and experience of the incumbent. Compensation shall be determined based upon the experience and qualifications of the incumbent.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
