SFI was established in 1984, and its early intellectual leaders included George Cowan, David Pines, and Nobel Laureates Murray Gell-Mann (Physics), Kenneth Arrow (Economics), and Phil Anderson (Physics). Today SFI is the leading institution for complex systems theory research, and enjoys a notable reputation within academia. Our 12 resident faculty and 20 postdoctoral fellows are augmented by approximately 120 external faculty from top universities around the world. Arizona State University’s president Michael Crow has called us "a modern version of Plato's Academy." Rolling Stone Magazine called us "a sort of Justice League of renegade geeks, where teams of scientists from disparate fields study the Big Questions." Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Cormac McCarthy comments on SFI can be found here: https://goo.gl/viOH20.
It is difficult to understate the impact complex systems is currently having on science. Writing for Slate.com in 2016, David Auerbach argued that complexity theory "has been one of the most important responses to the ballooning of knowledge." Complex systems are not merely complicated. Rather, complex systems exhibit highly nonlinear behaviors, such as phase transitions, emergence, and feedback loops. These systems can also adapt and evolve, making their behavior hard to predict and control. In addition to its academic implications, the applications of complex systems science are growing rapidly.
SFI is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. For more
