Dean of the College of Education, Science, and Mathematics

Viterbo University (www.viterbo.edu) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Education, Science, and Mathematics, which includes academic and administrative leadership of the School of Education and the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The undergraduate academic programs in the College include education (elementary and secondary), biochemistry, biology, biopsychology, chemistry, environmental biology, mathematical physics, mathematics, and sport science and leadership. The College also offers post-baccalaureate teacher licensure, a Master of Arts in Education, and an extensive portfolio of graduate licensures/endorsements and professional development courses delivered at the main campus in La Crosse, Wisc., through two off-campus centers in Wisconsin and Iowa, in partnership with professional associations and PK-12 schools districts, and online. The College, which serves over 800 students, maintains accreditation through NCATE/CAEP, is recognized and approved by both the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Iowa Department of Education for the certification of teachers and to offer endorsements, and is approved by the American Chemical Society for the chemistry program.

Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief academic officer of the College of Education, Science, and Mathematics. The Dean assures the quality of the College’s academic programs through direction of the department chairs, program directors/ coordinators, and 26 full-time faculty and administrators, is responsible for organizational planning and development, and participates in the University’s deans’ council and Presidential cabinet meetings. The Dean is also responsible for faculty, staff and student recruitment; fundraising and friend-raising; budget preparation and allocation of resources for the College; professional development of faculty and staff; evaluation of programs and personnel; laboratory spaces and resources; and, in collaboration with the faculty, curriculum planning and development.

The University enrolls about 1,800 undergraduates, and over 800 students are enrolled in associate degree programs, master’s programs in education, nursing, business, mental health counseling, and servant leadership, as well as the doctor in nursing practice program. With an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, the average class size is 16, helping to cultivate the strong relationships shared among students and faculty through mentoring, advising, and teaching. Today, there are more than 20,000 Viterbo alumni nationwide.

Viterbo University seeks a visionary, student-centered, collaborative, data-driven individual to join its leadership team. The Dean will:

  • Possess a doctorate in a field represented by the College from a regionally accredited university.
  • Have administrative experience with undergraduate or graduate education programs in a university setting.
  • Preferably, hold a doctoral degree in education, have experience in graduate programs, and possess a working knowledge of the disciplines and professions represented in the College.
  • Be a creative, innovative, and energetic leader who demonstrates an ability to work in an environment of expansion and aspiration.
    Be committed to excellence in teaching, and demonstrate a record of scholarship commensurate with associate or full professor rank.
  • Possess an understanding of the academic process, professional accreditation reports, and shared governance.
  • Have experience in obtaining external resources in support of education programs, such as through fundraising, external partnerships, and/or the writing of grants.
  • Support Viterbo University’s liberal arts tradition, Catholic mission, and its strong Franciscan values and traditions.
