The chancellor functions as the chief executive officer of the campus and reports to the Arkansas State University System president. Founded in 1909 and accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association, the university has maintained its student-centered teaching tradition with an increased emphasis on scholarly research. A-State offers 47 degree programs within 163 major fields of study across the doctoral, specialist, master’s, bachelor, and associate degree levels. A-State Online is the largest provider of digitally-accessible programming in the state of Arkansas.
The Jonesboro campus is host to the first osteopathic medical school in Arkansas, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State, and is partnering to open the first American-style residential campus in Mexico with A-State Campus Querétaro. The university has doctoral degrees in educational leadership, environmental science, heritage studies, molecular biosciences, nursing practice, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. The Division I Red Wolves intercollegiate athletics program competes at the FBS level as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
Home to more than 14,000 students and more than 80,000 alumni, Arkansas State University is the largest and oldest campus of the Arkansas State University System. The position is currently held by an interim chancellor who will not be a candidate. The new chancellor will have the opportunity to work with the university community in the development of a new strategic plan. Continuing its growth, Arkansas State University seeks a visionary, innovative, and consensus-building individual to lead the university in its second century of service. The preferred candidate will have a sustained record of character and integrity deserving of the public trust, an earned doctorate or recognized terminal degree, a minimum of five years of leadership experience in a university setting, a demonstrable commitment to the ideals of excellence and diversity, and a successful track record working in an environment of strong shared governance.
The campus is located in Jonesboro, a city of more than 72,000 residents, and the Jonesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of over 124,000. Jonesboro enjoys a diversified economy based on health care, education, agriculture, food processing plants, and industrial manufacturing. The city serves an 18-county retail trade area of a half million residents. Jonesboro also boasts a vibrant downtown entertainment district that features fine dining establishments, art galleries, musical performances, and other cultural activities. Memphis is approximately 75 miles to the southeast; Little Rock is 130 miles to the southwest; and the Ozark Mountains are 50 miles to the west.
