Director of Physical Plant
The incumbent will report directly to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management
and provide staff support regarding all physical plant operations. The Physical Plan Department provides support services to both the Monroe Park and Medical College of Virginia Campuses.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing and
controlling the services of the Department, which include 24-hour emergency repair, preventive maintenance, zone maintenance, utility services, locksmith services, recycling, roofing, grounds, central mechanical/electrical, highway equipment, general services, housekeeping services, and support shops.

In addition to the routine maintenance services for academic space, Physical Plant provides
maintenance for the Student Housing Division for all on campus housing of approximately 6000 beds. Maintenance and housekeeping is also provided to Parking and Transportation

The Director provides overall direction and leadership to the physical plant operations with over 220 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $42 million.

Duties and Responsibilities: Establishing and adhering to schedules, budgets, and program
parameters; status reporting; establishing monitoring, and enforcing established policies and procedures; administrating contracts with outside entities; making staffing assignments to support workload demands; interacting with university, city and state officials, and ensuring compliance with state codes and standards.

Qualifications: The Director must demonstrate leadership ability and senior level planning skills with a good working knowledge of facilities operations, budget management, and construction.  Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible managerial and supervisory experience in engineering and/or facilities management in a higher education environment or equivalent large installation is required. Excellent oral and communication skills, and a strong customer service orientation are required. Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field is required. Advanced degree in an engineering or business administration is strongly desired. Registration as a Professional Engineer is highly preferred.
