Indiana University is making a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment to create and expand the infrastructure for research and training in network science through the establishment of the Indiana University Network Science Institute (IUNI).
IUNI seeks applicants for a research scientist opening in Social Science; rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. Qualified candidates will have completed a PhD in sociology, political science, business, management, complex systems, or other relevant discipline.
The primary role of this position is to conduct research and technical activities that arise in the area of social network analysis carried out as part of the Institute’s research mission. The work of this position will focus particularly on egocentric or personal network research and potentially some whole or complete network analysis. Knowledge of community-based survey methods is required.
The incumbent will play a key role on the cohort study that is part of the recently announced IU Grand Challenge Precision Health Initiative (http://grandchallenges.iu.edu/). In the early years, the incumbent will lead the population-based cohort survey of the adult population of Indiana residents, which has a multi-faceted study design similar to the first stage of the Adolescent Health Study (Add Health). The incumbent will have the opportunity to be involved from the beginning in the development of the study protocol and data collection processes, as well as training and supervising field staff. The position will be based in Bloomington, Indiana and some in-state travel will be required. In addition, the incumbent will have access to a wide range of other data sources and some time to pursue his or her own research agenda. Core activities of the position also include grant writing, data analysis and interpretation, presentation and publication of scientific findings.
Importantly, the incumbent will enjoy a primary affiliation with the relatively new, Indiana University Network Science Institute (IUNI), a global leader in interdisciplinary network science (http://iuni.iu.edu/). IUNI is the result of a multi-million dollar investment by the university’s highest levels of administration to create a collaborative resource for cutting edge network science across IU’s campuses. Disciplines represented by IUNI affiliated faculty are too numerous to mention and include, physics, computer science, sociology, neuroscience, medicine, dentistry, toxicology, cognitive science, computational social science, informatics, library science, political science, bioinformatics and more. These researchers study a range of topics from mental health stigma, to addictions, brain connectomics, social media, alzheimer’s disease, science of science, cancer biology, the environment, and more.
