The Assistant Director has two primary, highly impactful roles: (1) envisioning, designing and implementing programming to create and enhance institutional equity, inclusion and social justice through collaboration with university partners; and (2) providing vital coordination for the Office of Institutional Diversity’s portfolio of strategic initiatives, including its bias incident response work and coordination of university committees, boards and work groups. The Assistant Director is a key member of the Office of Institutional Diversity team and will provide essential leadership during this exciting period of growth and development in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice at Oregon State.

Oregon State is actively engaged in building a more diverse, equitable, inclusive and socially just educational environment at its main campus in Corvallis, its branch campus in Bend, its marine science center in Newport, and its agricultural experiment stations and county extension offices throughout Oregon. To better meet its goals in these important areas, the university has re-envisioned and re-organized its administrative offices working in the areas of diversity, inclusion and social justice to provide clear focus on its mission and goals. As part of these efforts, Oregon State has established a Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer (VPCDO) position. The VPCDO oversees the Office of Institutional Diversity, which, through collaboration, partnership, and action, works to create a university community characterized in all it does by a central commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice.

The creation of the VPCDO role and the Office of Institutional Diversity enhances Oregon State’s existing commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion. The Office of Diversity & Cultural Engagement, part of the Division of Student Affairs, creates extensive social justice programming and operates Oregon State’s seven cultural resource centers – the Women’s Center, the Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center, the Asian and Pacific Cultural Center, Native American Longhouse Eena Haws, Centro Cultural César Chávez, Ettihad Cultural Center and the Pride Center. Staff and faculty expand their knowledge of equity and inclusion through programs including the Social Justice Education Initiative, Search Advocate and the Oregon State ADVANCE program. The VPCDO and Office of Institutional Diversity complement and enhance these existing efforts by providing advocacy and leadership for equity and inclusion advancement at the institutional level.


Position Description

 Position Summary

 The Assistant Director provides leadership and coordination to advance the Office of Institutional Diversity’s (OID) portfolio of initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Initiatives, the Assistant Director’s responsibilities include: (1) envisioning, designing and implementing programming in collaboration with university partners; (2) coordinating and contributing to Oregon State’s bias incident response process; (3) coordinating and contributing to the Oregon State Leadership Council for Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice, and other university groups and boards managed by OID; (4) assisting in the development of strategic communications; and (5) providing supervision for OID graduate teaching assistants and student employees.

 Decision Making Guidelines

 Issues encountered by the Assistant Director are varied, complex and non-recurring that may require novel and creative approaches to resolution. New concepts and approaches may need to be developed. Decisions contribute to the management and operations of a department/unit. The position contributes to decisions on the overall strategy and direction of a department/unit.

 Position maintains confidential, sensitive and privileged information, and performs duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, discretion and flexibility.
