Oakland University Presidential Search

The Board of Trustees of Oakland University invites nominations and applications for the position of president.

Oakland University is located on 1,443 acres of scenic land in the cities of Rochester Hills and Auburn Hills in Oakland County, Michigan, in the greater Detroit area.

For nearly 60 years, Oakland University has played an integral role in the growth and development of its region and the state of Michigan. Defined as a doctoral research university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of teaching, the university has grown from just 570 students in 1957 to 20,300 today.  With more than 130 bachelor’s degree programs and 138 graduate degree and certificate programs, Oakland is dedicated to delivering a distinctive undergraduate experience that is complemented by the strength of its graduate offerings and research accomplishments. The University seeks an innovative leader to guide the University beyond its current success.

Qualities sought in the next president

The next president of Oakland University must be a person of the highest integrity with a commitment to Oakland’s mission of student success and engagement.  The next president will have a terminal degree and/or a distinguished career and qualifications that will inspire the confidence of the academic community.  Given that the future of higher education requires resources beyond state support and tuition, the role of the president will be to enhance alternative opportunities. The candidate must also demonstrate a record of success in the following areas:

  • Innovation
  • Garnering of fiscal resources including private fundraising and partnerships  
  • Collaboration and implementation
  • Advocacy of vision and mission  
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity
  • Ability to inspire others
  • Experience in growing an institution’s reputation
