The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Urban Archaeology beginning Fall 2017.


The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology is a four-field department with faculty in each. Teaching duties will involve introductory, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate courses in archaeology to complement faculty specialization. We are looking for a candidate with refereed publications and a commitment to grant writing and undergraduate education.  Teaching at the CUNY Graduate Center in the doctoral program in Anthropology is a possibility.


The candidate is expected to develop an active research program with both field-based and laboratory based research that will involve students in her/his research, foster connections with the Graduate Center and develop a concentration in both the undergraduate and graduate levels for Cultural Resource Management (CRM) archaeology. Candidates should complement and contribute to departmental strengths and interests.



  • D. in Anthropology by June 2017
  • Geographic specialization in Urban/Historical Archaeology of the Northeast preferred.
  • A strong theoretical foundation, expertise in analytic techniques for the study of the archaeological record (artifacts such as pottery, lithics, metallurgy, geoarchaeology, or other paleoenvironmental reconstruction specialty, Geographic information System (GIS) bioarchaeology).
  • Desire and ability to teach undergraduates and graduate students required
