The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) seeks a full-time Director of Research Projects to oversee CIC’s research and data activities. CIC is the major national service organization for all small and mid-sized independent liberal arts colleges and universities in the U.S. Currently, 680 colleges and universities and 86 organizations are members. CIC’s 25-person staff, based in Washington, DC, serves its member institutions through conferences, externally funded projects and programs, research and advocacy, and other activities designed to assist institutions in improving leadership expertise, educational programs, administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility.
The Director of Research Projects is responsible for the operations of CIC’s research and data activities. The Director of Research Projects reports to the Senior Vice President and works closely with other senior staff on a variety of projects. Research projects planned for the near future include an analysis of trends in the financial viability of independent colleges, a comparative analysis of alumni outcomes using the Baccalaureate and Beyond (B&B:08/12) dataset, and an updated report on trends in the pipeline to the presidency of independent colleges.

Responsibilities:
 Conduct research using national and proprietary datasets and write research briefs and reports;
 Develop and manage research projects conducted by leading higher education experts;
 Conduct ad hoc research to support requests from trade and national media outlets and other CIC projects and activities;
 Work with a consultant to produce two annual benchmarking reports for presidents of member colleges and universities: the Key Indicators Tool (KIT) and the Financial Indicators Tool (FIT);
 Develop and update comparative data for CIC’s Making the Case website and Power of Liberal Arts Education campaign;
 Conduct and analyze periodic member surveys and event evaluations;
 Provide up-to-date records of institutional characteristics for CIC’s database; and
 Represent CIC at various meetings and seminars.

Requirements:
Master’s degree and two years’ work experience in higher education or a related association required; doctoral degree preferred. Desired skills include: familiarity with the U.S. Department of Education datasets (especially IPEDS) and other major sources of education data; knowledge

of quantitative research methodology and design; ability to synthesize and summarize research findings in a clear manner in narrative and graphic form for diverse audiences; proficiency in statistical analysis (SPSS/SAS, Access, and Excel) and experience with large datasets; excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills, including attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
